By Melissa Sharpton

When you think of area rugs, the first thing that comes to mind is most likely Oriental area rugs and the traditional design and look they offer. Contemporary and modern-decorated homes are growing in popularity as older styles are fading out. Variety is the flavor of life, after all. This is completely natural, as people's opinions and tastes do change over time. Modern area rugs are gaining in popularity and can be seen at just about any retailer that sells interior design items.

In many cases, modern area rugs have designs, patterns, and colors that are not often seen in other types of rugs. This includes some interesting contrasting color combinations as well as new-style elegant designs. Decorating with an area rug is far cheaper than completely redoing a room or repainting. A bright and fun area rug compliments a neutral decor and brings an affordable contrast to the design.

Because there are so many designs available, your personal tastes are going to greatly affect the type of rugs that you prefer to put into your home. The most common natural fibers used in area rugs are wool, cotton, and sisal; while acrylic fibers or polypropylene are common synthetic rug fibers.

Next you need to determine whether the environment or look and feel is more important to you in an area rug. Eco-friendly rugs are also a big thing to consider. more and more people are buying environmentally friendly area rugs.

Saving the environment is a modern concern and area rugs are now commonly made to be safe to the world around us. You can find a large amount of area rugs that are made with organic and durable materials. Area rugs that are made from renewable resources and are recyclable are quickly becoming a preferred choice.

All modern area rugs bring a lively and fun design element to any contemporary room. The final decision in which type of rug you choose will depend on how functional, affordable, attractive, and eco-friendly you want your rug to be.
