What Are Prepaid Cell Phones?

By Tina Manuel

Prepaid cell phones are a great solution if your teenage son or daughter keeps asking for a phone of their own. You will not have to worry about expensive bills at the end of each month. They can also be kept to one side in case of emergencies, and they can easily be bought by people with a bad credit rating.

Prepaid cells are useful for people that do not want to sign up for a long contract with a particular company. Most such phones will have a variety of services that suit most people's needs. It is not possible to get penalized for extra use as can happen with regular phones.

You can find them on sale in the majority of retail outlets and electronics stores. Currently, approximately 10 per cent of cell phone users in the US have prepaid phones, with women being the biggest users.

Today, prepaid phones will come with a host of services such as text and picture messaging; you can choose which services you want. As long as you have bought minutes of talk time you will always be able to make calls.

Before you purchase a prepaid cell phone it is best to fully understand all the main advantages and disadvantages. Of course the best aspect of these phones is that they give the user a degree of freedom and flexibility that does not come with postpaid phones. You can make as many calls as you want; the only restriction is how many minutes you buy. You can use the phone extensively one month and then hardly ever the next, this is no problem. Most often, the minutes you have bought can be carried over to the following month. The actual prepaid plan can be changed easily to remove or add particular services.

As with any consumer item there are a few drawbacks. The biggest issue with prepaid phones is that the cost per minute for making a call is likely to be higher than with an ordinary contract. Another problem is that the minutes that you purchase will come with an expiry date, sometimes this is 30 days or it can be 90 days or more, you need to ensure you understand when your minutes will become redundant. It is often the case that if your phone becomes deactivated through lack of usage then your number can get deactivated and you may have to acquire a new number when you want to get it up and running again.

Prepaid phones are great for particular types of people. They can help to keep a lid on the amount of money spent on calls and are very convenient to use.
