Smoking Cessation: The Good Habit Exchange

By Chris James

One of the most common terminologies used when describing life saving resuscitation techniques has always been:

"In with the good air ... out with the bad."

This thought can also be used when considering a stop smoking initiative to help you quit. It goes without saying that when it comes to quitting smoking, you are quite literally getting rid of the 'bad air' and replacing it with good. But you can use this information elsewhere as well.

Many doctors now agree that it may be beneficial and provide the smoker their best chances of quitting by using more than one method at a time. As it seems that people who have successfully quit, have done just that. They did not rely on just on method, but two or more, to help them break the habit.

Replacing the bad habit with the good should be relatively easy. This is simply because a smoker not only has to deal with the habit, but due to the widespread social issues surrounding them, smokers must spend more and more time just trying to find a place in which to have a cigarette throughout their day.

It is now being shown that smokers who choose to make healthy habit decisions are the ones gaining long-term freedom from the cigarette. As well, they are also finding that they are enjoying life more as their healthy habits become part of everyday routine.

The healthy habit alternative to smoking does not have to be anything complicated. For example, rather than smoke a cigarette at the designated smoking area at work, take a brisk walk around the block. Rather than smoking, resurrect the age-old art of letter writing and send a true piece of written correspondence (on paper!) to a friend or family member. The list of healthy alternatives and healthy substitutes to smoking is literally endless. And again, accompanied with other smoking cessation tools, the good habit exchange really will increase your chances of ultimate stop smoking success.
