Habs Rip Struggling Islanders

The Montreal Canadiens have gotten off to a slow start this season, and entered Thursday night's game against the New York Islanders having gone thirteen games without a win in regulation dating back to last season. Apparently, all they needed to cure their ails was a team that was struggling more than they are. The Habs jumped on them early scoring three goals in the first two periods en route to a 5-1 victory at the Bell Centre. Montreal improved to 4-5-0 with the victory while the Islanders dropped to 1-4-3.

NHL hockey betting devotees who weren't scared away by the -180 home favorite price tag on Montreal cashed their tickets with the Canadiens' big win. It was the sixth win for the Habs in their last eight meetings with the Islanders. The six goals scored just managed to go OVER the posted total of 5'. The Canadiens went OVER for only the fourth time in nine games, while the Islanders have gone OVER in five of their nine contests.

The sputtering Montreal offense finally woke up, helped by a 43-22 shots on goal advantage. When Montreal opened a 2-0 lead in the first period it marked the first time this season that they'd led by more than a goal, a fact that surprised left winger Mike Cammalleri:

"We're making it hard on ourselves. That's something -- I didn't realize that until right now but that makes sense. Every game's been so tight, and it's important to try and win in tight games and find ways to win those games but at the same time you can't do that 82 times a year and then however many games in the playoffs, so it was important to get out to a little bit of a lead and hang on to one tonight."

Montreal goaltender Jaroslav Halek played well in relief of starter Carey Price, but lost his shutout bid when he misplayed a puck just seconds into the final period. Cammalleri described a conversation he had with Halek after the game:

"After the game I went to give him a hug and he said, 'I don't like shutouts. And I said, 'Well, you better like shutouts!' But he played great when we needed him tonight, made some solid saves, and we'll let that one go."

Islanders' coach Scott Gordon admitted that his team's poor play made it easy for the Habs' to dominate:

"We were a pretty easy team to play against. Defensively we were on our heels because of all our turnovers and it wasn't just in one area, it was coming out of our zone, it was situations where we had full control of the puck and we're not making plays. It's probably the worst that I've ever seen it tonight and it's something that we've got to get better at."

Montreal plays their next two games at home, hosting the New York Rangers on Saturday night and welcoming the Islanders back to the Bell Centre for another game next Monday night. They'll then head to Pittsburgh for a game against the defending Stanley Cup Champion Penguins on Wednesday. The Islanders have a Saturday night home game against the Washington Capitals before their return engagement with Montreal. They'll then return home to play their regional rivals the New York Rangers on Wednesday.

Battling Morning Blues

These days, the trend of sleeping late till noon is on its rise. In fact, it is now becoming a status symbol to sleep till late in the morning. But, this trend is also increasing depression, lethargy, and pointlessness. However, those who wake up early in the morning are full of zeal and vigour. They have positive energies which make them spend the rest of the day full of activity. Unfortunately, these kinds of people are now very rare.

Sometimes, you wake up and feel that the life is perfectly going the way you want it to be. However, there are bad days as well when you have a hollow feeling instead. But all the days cannot be the same. In fact, all days cannot be your good days. This is how life is, and you have to cope with it indeed.

This article does not tend to make you feel bad about your sleeping habits, but it can lead you towards adopting possible proper sleeping habits. It is a part of human psyche to put the chores on tomorrow that can easily be done today. To feel depressed about all this fuss is not a positive attitude towards life. You need to correct one habit, and rest will be managed automatically.

The primary point to be considered is to have sufficient sleep of about 8 hours. Having a sound sleep of about 8 hours is a healthy habit. It will help you in conducting the whole day activities in an efficient way.

The classic being late excuse is that the alarm did not go off, when in fact, the poor clock did ring on time, but it was silenced very quickly with just a thump of the hand. Know your capability; do not put your alarm clock on the bedside table (remember the evil snooze button!). Put it on a coffee table far away from your bed, but not so far that the grating noise will not rouse you from the bed.

Determination plays a vital role in winning the fight against your desire to sleep even after hearing the buzz of the clock. Just try to stand straight out of your bed at a single buzz of your clock. Do not let yourself sleep after hearing the alarm. You may feel dizzy at first, but later you will feel better.

It is better to keep the curtains off while sleeping. In this way, your mind will receive a call of nature with the rising sun. This will help you realising that it is the time to get up.

It is advisable not to warm up your room, even in the winters. Moderately warm room helps you breathing cold air, which helps you waking early in the morning.

Let's face it; the human mind is more than likely one of the most powerful things in all creation and as such, one shouldn't ever under estimate the power of the subconscious mind. A perfect example of this can be witnessed when we sit down to watch TV. In some cases we don't like what we're watching and so we decide to change channels and watch something else instead. This is an action of the conscious mind. On other occasions, we reach for the remote and we flick through the different channels for no apparent reason. This of course is an action on the subconscious level, but have you ever stopped to think about what made you do it? Because this was an action on the subconscious level you probably never gave it a second thought.

Just how these actions happen is nothing short of being amazing. Perhaps another program which you dislike was just about to start and your subconscious mind immediately sent out a signal for you to change channels. This is just one example of the influence your subconscious mind has over your actions. If one stops to consider just how much influence your subconscious mind can have over your actions, then it only makes sense that you need to train yourself in such a way so that you can have control over your subconscious mind. By training yourself you can improve the quality of your life significantly.

Providing you can learn how to harness and control the power of your subconscious, you'll be able to live the type of life you long for. Unfortunately, most people are brought up believing that there are many dangers lurking in the subconscious mind. Over and above using affirmations, there are also a number of other things you can do in order to take control of your subconscious mind. Before you become tempted to try and discredit this, you should bear in mind that it is something which has been proved scientifically. Scientific experiments have proven that the law of attraction allows a person to manifest what they want, providing they can communicate with the subconscious mind successfully.

How to Liberate a Bow Arm

Today's message should be very helpful to you if you are like many a violinist, and can always use an insight or two to keep your right arm technique sharp.

You see, most fiddlers have four main challenges where it comes to their bow-arm; keeping it straight, keeping it horizontal, achieving clean, non-disruptive string crossings, and coordinating changes of string and direction with the left hand.

Now, you may think of disagreeing with me. You may be thinking, 'my biggest problem is with spiccato, or up-bow staccato, or martel, I can do those other things.'

If that's the case, I'd say, you'd be wise to pay attention, your spiccato difficulties may have more to do with these things than you think.

Actually today I'm just going to discuss the first two elements - keeping the bow straight and keeping it horizontal. For most of us 'straight' is pretty well understood to mean parallel to the bridge. What is less understood, in my experience, is the need to conceive of all the elements of the bow arm - hand, forearm, and upper arm - as inhabiting one two-dimensional plane of movement.

And for this to happen there are exactly 3 joints we have that must ALLOW this to happen - the wrist, the elbow and the shoulder.

Take the wrist - one of the most common no-nos I see is the RAISING of the wrist at the frog. Raising the wrist immediately takes one component of your bow-arm out of that horizontal plane of movement so necessary to an efficient, seamless bow arm.

So how should the wrist flex? The wrist must flex forward, remaining within the 'plane of motion' the bow arm inhabits whilst also maintaining the bow in a position parallel to the bridge.

This idea of staying in the plane of motion also extends to the elbow. I see a lot of players introducing unnecessary complications to their bow-arm by elevating and lowering the elbow in the course of drawing a full bow.

Well, there's just too much going on, and all that contrary energy is getting fed right into the bow stick.

And last, there's the shoulder. Oh yea, the shoulder. How fresh is the memory of my father standing next to me tapping my shoulder to get it to relax during my early years of practice.

Though relaxed, the muscles in the shoulder must nonetheless control critical movements of the upper arm that comes into play at the lower part of the bow and during string crossings.

I'll talk more about string crossings soon, yet for now it's important to understand that, although the shoulder is bearing the weight of the arm and bow, it must be relaxed, as it plays a critical role in moving the bow straight and horizontally at the frog.

This is to say, you cannot confuse the vertical movements involved in string crossings with the lateral movements of the upper arm involved in bowing.

This morning I again made a worthwhile investment into my practice by playing Kreutzer #2 at the extreme frog. And you might be interested to know that for me to accomplish it, at tempo from top to bottom with a really smooth detach bowing, I 'belly-breathed' like a stallion in heat. You see, you've got to keep the upper body absolutely relaxed to do play cleanly this way, and belly-breathing is a secret every violinist should know to facilitate this penetrating kind of relaxation.
