Crucial Baby Crib Sheets Security Guidance

By Dorothea Frankson

As parents decorate a nursery for their new baby, they may not realize that there are any safety hazards when it comes to baby bedding. It's easy to get carried away with cute comforters, so pay attention to ensure your baby's crib is safe, and still stylish.

No need to make your baby's bed like your own: the main components are fitted sheets and light receiving blankets. If you buy a comforter, no matter how cute it is or how well it goes with the decor, it will not be needed until your child reaches the age of two. When your child is an infant (0-12 months), you should never cover the child in a heavy blanket, because this is a suffocation hazard as well a surefire way for your child to overheat in his or her sleep.

By dressing your infant in seasonally appropriate clothing, you can avoid the use of heavy blankets or your infant becoming uncomfortable while sleeping.

If the baby bedding you choose comes with matching bumpers, throw them away, because bumpers are not safe to have in the crib with an infant and have been linked to SIDS. If your baby is old enough to start climbing around, a crib bumper will provide him or her with a boost that he or she needs to escape the crib. When looking for baby boy bedding or baby girl bedding, you may be tempted by those cute looking bumpers, but think again. Bumpers are not a good idea even for cheap baby boy bedding.

Take stuffed animals, pillows and other dangerous items out of the crib before placing the baby in the crib. As long as you are watching, your child can play with toys in the crib, but take them out as soon as he becomes sleepy, and make sure they're out of reach.

Crib bedding can make a nursery look wonderful, but the pillows and comforters should be used as decorative items only, because they are not safe to have in your child's crib. Use the bare minimum in infant bedding, and if you're not entirely sure, ask your pediatrician.

A pillow and comforters are appropriate for toddler beds, but by then your child may have a say in the decor.
