Valuable Tips On Portrait Photography

By Myra Stevens

Individuals have been the theme of many famous photographs from time to time. Portrait photography focuses on not just the subjects but on their personalities as well, thereby bringing the frozen frames to life.

A good portrait photograph beats the norm and is able to catch moods and angles of the subject like never seen before. However, portraits of one person or of whole families are also taken by photographers, and these are usually stuck in family albums.

The most important thing in a portrait image is the close up, and the countenance of the subject must come out sharply in it. This is achieved by a common camera trick of making the background a little bit obscure and indistinct so that the person's face gets the maximum focus. A camera with a wider aperture can strike this perfect tuning between the background and the person's face. One the other hand, it is better to click with a normal aperture if emphasis on the background is as essential as on the person, which is mostly the case in outdoor photography.

Without ample light to illuminate the face, photographers find it difficult to click a good picture. However, some important photography tips if sincerely followed can yield that ideal portrait photograph. A facial profile of a subject sitting by a window looks unique and appealing, especially when daylight brightens a side of the face. A reflective sheet can be used to light up the other side of the individual's face. However, portrait photography is best shot in studios as lights can be regulated there.

Another important thing that you must remember is that the more comfortable a subject is during the photography session, better the chances are of getting a perfect portrait photograph. The human element in photography is so vital that all technical efforts will fail to make it a nice portrait if the subject is stiff and feeling awkward before the camera.
