Professional Expertise And Traits Needed For An Undertaker's Job

By Marjorie Wong

Arrangements and organising activities related to funerals are generally left in charge of undertakers, who are also known as funeral directors. Mentioned below are some of the essential skills and qualifications that undertakers should possess to rise in their profession.

Since an undertaker's services may be needed at any time of day or night, the person venturing into this profession should be willing to be on call for 24 hours. He must be ready to work away from his workplace as the task requires him to be at the place where he is needed.

To be an undertaker, a person must be able to communicate well and should accommodate the opinions of others. People from various cultures, religions and traditions as well as those of any age will have to be managed by him with equal ease. An understanding and compassionate attitude will be of excellent help in this profession. But he will have to offer support to the grieving family and should remain strong and emotionally detached so that he can perform his functions well.

Undertakers must be serious and dignified by nature, but must not look sad or morose, as this may intensify the grief of the family and friends of the deceased person.

By nature, undertakers must be broad minded. They should be willing to respect the faith and beliefs of all religions and should be knowledgeable in this field. They must be conscious of different customs and practices followed by different groups during the funeral ceremony.

Good management and the power to organise are essential skills for an undertaker. Making arrangements for necessary services like flowers, ceremonies etc will entail cooperation with several providers and will need leadership and management skills.

An undertaker must be proficient in legal matters and should know the legal formalities to be followed, or the formal approvals required from the government authorities before conducting funeral ceremonies. The necessary regulations and formalities to be followed to get a death certificate or to file insurance claims must also be known to him.

Lastly, an undertaker must make sure that his driver's licence is regularly updated and that he can drive the hearse or funeral limousines during the ceremony.
