The Things You Should Know About Hypnosis

By Benjamin Cox

Hypnosis and its healing offshoot, hypnotherapy, have always been steeped in myths. Some regard them to be occult whereas others discard them as pseudo science. Provided below are some general beliefs prevalent about hypnosis, and the real facts behind them.

There is no mysticism or rituals involved in hypnosis. Psychology and the other sciences have a critical role to play in the hypnotic procedure, and it is very simple to acquire and practice. Even people who have witnessed hypnosis on others mostly refuse to acknowledge it. They hold that the people who have undergone hypnosis are mentally not powerful enough to resist the impact of the practitioner. But this again is a complete fallacy. Hypnosis can in fact be successfully practised on people who are mentally tough and are trying their best to resist the spell.

Another notion about hypnosis that people have made up without reason is that it is an alternate state of consciousness. A hypnotized person is fully awake to what is going on around him. During the hypnotic state, the subject relaxes entirely and is thus able to concentrate fully on the suggestions provided by the practitioner.

Some scientific discoveries have stated that only about 5% of the population is capable of being hypnotized, which is the third misconception on this list. The scientists are somewhat true in their own way, because they tried hypnotising their subjects by the same hypnosis method without acknowledging individual differences in nature and disposition. One hypnosis procedure for all is not a viable answer as different individuals fall under different personality types, and thus are responsive to different methods.

People also tend to equate hypnosis with meditation. However, meditation is essentially a personal experience that has got nothing to do with communication, while communication is a fundamental part of any successful hypnosis. Trance too is not related to hypnosis at all. Trance is again a state of mind devoid of any communication, while communication forms the very basis of the hypnosis technique.

A majority of people believe that it is impossible to bring about changes in one's appearance and behaviour through hypnosis training or hypnotherapy. Hypnosis obviously cannot achieve something that is unnatural to the body. But by mentally conditioning a person to abandon addictive behaviour like overeating and chain smoking, and by raising one's inspiration levels, hypnosis can bring about important physical changes in a person and pave the way for a healthier body.

Hypnosis, and particularly hypnotherapy, can have an important role to play in the well-being of a person, and not trying them out just because of some misconceptions is a missed opportunity.
