Finding The Best Cordless Drill

By Kyle Loroft

There are various factors to consider when examining cordless drills. All the different factors cause the decision on which cordless drill is best for you to be even harder. Let's begin with the fundamentals:

Quality of Construction

"Build quality" is defined as how well made the drill is and how long it will last with vigorous use. Extended use of a drill that doesn't contain a quality motor can cause it to "burn up". Additionally, the drill's clutch, will produces different torque intensity, can begin to malfunction. Drills also contain parts and/or switches that must function properly.

Typically, you can tell somewhat if a drill is of high-quality or not just by examining it and feeling its heft. If it doesn't seem expensive, it's probably not. However, a better way to decide how well a drill is constructed is to look at a number of reviews on the Internet.

Quality construction is a factor that will become apparent with use, so you can learn what other users' experiences have been with a particular drill.

Characteristics

The best cordless drill must possess at minimum the features we expect, but it does not need to have all the "bells and whistles," particularly if they are not necessary for you. We all expect a keyless chuck, permitting you to exchange bits using only your hands, without an additional tool. The best cordless drill must have a keyless chuck, one which does not allow the bit to slip.

A helpful characteristic is a clutch. With a clutch you can set a maximum torque for the drill so that you do not have to worry about over-tightening screws and striping them. We assume that most drills will have a clutch. Another gratifying characteristic is being capable of multiple speeds. With multiple speeds you can use the drill at high speed and low torque or at a lesser speed and higher torque, making the drill more functional for various jobs.

Recently, a few newer drill models have been including an integrated LED light. This is a great feature if you have to drill in a dim area. However, it's a convenience and not a necessity.
