Choosing Skin Care and Makeup Products for Your Skin Type

By Sidney Abeyta

We are all envious of those pretty super-models and movie actresses who look so amazing in magazine photos and on screen. But you know what? Every girl can look her very best when she learns a few easy tricks for selecting and putting on makeup.

Believe it or not, the first step in getting closer to the best cosmetics look is... taking care of your skin! That's right - when you take good care of your skin, you give yourself the start of a gorgeously made-up face. That means setting up a daily skin care regimen based on three words: cleanse, tone and moisturize, in that order.

After you determine your skin type, you can select the trio of facial care products that are best for you. Regular facial cleansers, astringents and lotions work with normal skin. A Very dry skin needs a regimen with skin care items that are rich in creamy emollients to improve and maintain moisture. Acne-prone needs water-based skin care products that won't add more oil. People with combination skin, - oily in some places, dry in others - should clean with traditional products, but should take special care to add toner and moisturizer to the dry or acne-prone areas.

Next, choose a good foundation that corresponds with your skin type. You should always buy the absolute best cosmetics you can afford, because it's going on one of the most important parts of your body, your skin. Cheap makeup looks on your complexion like just what they are - cheap quality makeup.

Choosing the right colors of foundation is always the hardest part of choosing makeup product. To choose a shade, dab a litte bit of the foundation on the skin inside your wrist. That's a part of your body that's nearest in skin tone to your face. Just don't worry about trying to match your facial tone by putting foundation on the back of your hand because your hand will always get tan because the sunshine.

Now the REAL fun begins, picking a new look out of all those cool makeup colors! Most women like to have at least two entirely different cosmetics looks, one for daytime wear and another darker look for night and special occasions. Some women coordinate their makeup shades with the main shades in their wardrobes, while others like to try all the new stylish looks each season.

Many guys like to tease us about our cosmetics, calling it "war paint" (remember Mel Gibson and those brave Scottish warriors in the movie "Braveheart"?). Well, in a way, the men are correct: a girl whose cosmetics products helps her look good not only looks great, she feels secure and strong, able to handle anything life may throw at her. (And p.s., have you realized how many more professional men are getting facials nowadays?)

You can apply makeup product colors according to the color scheme of your outfit, or you can come with your own "signature" looks based on your complexion and hair color. Once you've decided on your makeup, be sure to blend everything together so that you have the right finish. Whether your makeup is bold or subtle, you don't want to end up looking like a fake barbie!

If you're unsure about how to pick your makeup, a makeup consultant can give you good suggestions. You might even have a friend who's good with makeup product and can give you ideas and help. The whole idea is that makeup is fun with an added bonus: A pretty face.
