Tips for Staying Healthy at College

By Julie Clark Robinson

You've gone down a long road to get to college, and you likely have a long road to go before you face full-blown adulthood and all that entails. What you don't need is to get sick while trying to juggle your studies, social life and working to keep it all together. College life can be great, but you just might find yourself feeling all alone if you get under the weather. Here are a few tips to prevent that from happening:

1. Eat right and exercise: It might be a no-brainer, but eating right continues to be an important theme in your life no matter how old you are. Your body needs energy more than ever now as you face long nights of study and stress of being away from home. Be leery of the carb-laden foods offered en masse at the cafeteria and try to opt for fresh fruits and vegetables and lean proteins as often as possible. You'll also want to raise your heart rate and strengthen muscles for at least 2.5 hours every week. A brisk walk or even dancing will do the trick to keep your cardiovascular strength up.

2. Build a strong support group: College is a very social time and that's a good thing as long as the people you surround yourself with are positive influences on you. People who tend to drag you down should be avoided, as well as too much solitude. Create healthy balance of spending time with good friends and restorative time alone.

3. Get vaccinated. Not only do you need to make sure you keep up with your routine check-ups and dental visits (either at home or in your college town) you should now be considering vaccines that been recommended by the American Medical Association in recent years to protect you from sexually transmitted diseases, various strains of influenza, meningitis and other diseases.

4. Sleep when you're tired. Everyone has to pull a late night or two during finals week, but don't make sleep deprivation a regular part of your college routine. Keep up with your studies and projects daily so that your workload doesn't snowball on your. Lack of sleep has been associated with many health-threatening conditions such as obesity and depression.

If you eat well, exercise, get enough sleep and keep up with your check ups you will be well on your way to a healthy college life. Keep in mind that too much partying isn't good for you and that alcohol dehydrates your body of much-needed water. Avoid smoke-filled rooms and, better yet, resist the urge to start smoking. Your future as a college-graduate awaits you and you don't an unhealthy habit following you.
