Do You Know What The Most Common Ovarian Cyst Symptoms Are?

By Amanda Clark

An ovarian cyst is any collection of fluid located in or on the ovaries. Almost all women present ovarian cysts at least once in life. Most cysts don't cause health problems and disappear without treatment within a few months. Others produce serious symptoms that can be life threatening. It is extremely important to know what are the most common ovarian cyst symptoms and signs that may indicate a serious health problem.

There are many types of ovarian cysts. Functional ovarian cysts are asymptomatic in most cases. It's good to know that this gynecological problem goes by itself without treatment. Since most ovarian cysts are benign, you shouldn't be worried about. The most common symptoms include stomach or pelvic pain caused by the rapid growth and stretching of the cyst.

Most women with ovarian cysts complain about a constant or intermittent pain, dizziness, vomiting, pressure in the rectum or bladder, acute pain the lower abdomen, sudden vaginal bleeding, breast tenderness, headaches, etc. Some functional ovarian cysts are responsible for sudden acute pain, often accompanied by nausea and vomiting (possible sign of cyst torsion) and acute pain immediately after intercourse.

Signs and symptoms that require urgent medical attention include severe pelvic pain that occurs suddenly, pain accompanied by fever, wet and cold skin, rapid breathing, fainting, dizziness and weakness (signs that indicate a shock).

Most of these symptoms can indicate a different disease or condition, such as ectopic pregnancy, ovarian cancer, endometriosis or pelvic inflammatory disease. Appendicitis and diverticulitis have similar symptoms.

It is possible to develop less common types of ovarian cysts, which represent a more serious medical condition: follicular cysts, corpus luteum cysts, dermoid cysts, hemorrhagic cysts, endometrioid cysts, and others.

Most functional ovarian cysts are harmless, asymptomatic and don't require any treatment. However, it's advisable to know more about ovarian cyst symptoms in order to prevent complications. Consulting the doctor as soon as you notice that something is wrong can save your life.
